DIY Stained Glass Window

This year, I decided to create a Transylvanian theme for my Halloween décor. In order to achieve a cathedral feel, I thought about different ways to create a stained glass effect in my window decor. Here is a step-by-step tutorial for making a stained glass window that is perfect for any gothic-themed get-together!

Materials:

1 large piece of cardboard

X-Acto knife

Black and white acrylic paint

Sponge paintbrush

Clear cellophane on a roll

Permanent markers in a variety of colors

Scissors

Stapler

1. Measure the window in your house where you want to place the stained glass window. A window that allows a lot of daylight in is best, as it will reflect the stained glass more realistically.

2. Find a piece of cardboard that is large enough to occupy the height of your window. A large TV box or other furniture box is a good choice.

3. Draw the outline of the gothic stained glass window on your cardboard. For ideas, look at gothic cathedral pictures online. Use a ruler and measuring tape to create accurate lines and symmetrical measurements.

4. Using an X-Acto knife, carefully cut out the window frame following the lines that you drew on the cardboard. Cut slowly and have someone hold the piece of cardboard while you cut to ensure your cuts are clean.

5. Once you've cut out your window, mix together black and white acrylic paint to get a grey color. Using a small sponge paintbrush, paint the front and sides of the window frame. Let dry completely.

6. Roll out a large piece of clear cellophane that fits the entire surface of the window and cut it straight across. Lay the window frame on top of the cellophane with the front side facing you. Trace the window and the window panes onto the cellophane using a black permanent marker.

7. Place the cellophane on a white surface. Free-hand stained glass patterns onto each pane of the window. For ideas, search "stained glass window" online and look through different photos. Color each design with permanent markers. Be careful not to rub the cellophane with your hand after you've colored it with the permanent marker. *Suggestion, try using brighter, warm colors on the top window panes and cooler, dark colors on the bottom panes of the window. This will create a cool ombré effect when the light filters through.

8. Let the cellophane dry. Lay the cellophane on top of the window frame. Make sure the back of the cellophane is laying atop the back of the window frame. Line up the drawings with the window panes.

9. Using a stapler, carefully staple the cellophane onto the window frame. Use many staples to ensure the cellophane is secured to the cardboard.

10. Cut the excess cellophane away from the window carefully.

And now you have a stained glass window for your next gothic party! Happy Halloween!

Cheers! -Lauren
